8PARA 0PAR@ ` ╕TEXT ` ¬Thomas, Edith Matilda1854╨1925poetBorn on August 12, 1854, in Chatham, Ohio, Edith Thomas grew up there and in Bowling Green, Kenton, and Geneva, Ohio. She attended public schools and in 1872 graduated from the Geneva Normal Institute. After a term at Oberlin College she taught school for two years and then took up the trade of typesetting. At an early age she began submitting poems, many of them inspired by her love of Greek literature and the poetry of John Keats, to local newspapers. Gradually her verses began appearing in periodicals as far away as New York City, where an encouraging uncle took her in 1881 to be introduced to literary society. She was befriended and championed by Helen Hunt Jackson, who secured publication of some of her poems in the Century magazine. In 1887 she moved permanently to New York City. Her verses were greatly in demand by such magazines as Scribner╒s, Atlantic, Harper╒s, Nation, and Outlook, and collections of them appeared regularly, among them A New Year╒s Masque, 1885, Lyrics and Sonnets, 1887, Heaven and Earth, 1889, The Inverted Torch, 1890, Fair Shadow Land, 1893, In Sunshine Land, verses for children, 1895, In the Young World, also for children, 1896, A Winter Swallow, 1896, The Dancers, and Other Legends and Lyrics, 1903, Cassia, 1905, The Children of Christmas, for children, 1907, The Guest at the Gate, 1909, The Flower from the Ashes, 1915, and The White Messenger, 1915. She also published a collection of prose essays and sketches as The Round Year, 1886, and a ╥Children of the Seasons╙ series in 1888. Her verses in classic forms were highly praised by many critics, although some readers found them cold and impersonal. Nature was a favorite subject of hers, and she occasionally produced topical verses as well. She helped in the editorial work on the Century Dictionary and from 1908 was a reader for Harper╒s Magazine. She died in New York City on September 13, 1925.
